“What we have witnessed this day is nothing less than the rebirth of the Old Kingdom. What has begun here in Gartet will spread to all the world, bringing peace and light to a dark world.” -Riurik, legendary founder of Gartet
“The dream has become a nightmare, and we cannot go back. Our only hope for the future is your hospitality.” -Valeran, speaking on behalf of the Gartetian refugees before the Min Maran council.
One hundred years ago, the rising kingdom of Gartet exploded in a sudden blaze of violence as evil creatures and riots filled the streets with blood. One man, Valeran Phage led a ragtag collection of refugees north out of the city. They came to the forest known as Ritten’s Ward and the elven city on its borders, Min Mara. Settled in the redwoods of the Ward, the elves of Min Mara had warily watched the rise of Min Mara over the previous century. Valeran and his followers sought refuge in the city, but many elves felt that his story only confirmed their suspicions of Gartet and highlighted the danger humans posed to a stable world. In the middle of the council’s deliberations, two elven patriots took matters into their own hands. Aua and Huled Longstride attempted to assassinate Valeran and drive off the refugees. Valeran survived the attempt, however, and the council’s decision was made. Othreir, the most respected member of the council urged that not only should Min Mara welcome the refugees, but that the only way to demonstrate good faith and a promise of a just society was to execute the assassins. The welcoming ceremony followed immediately after their public execution. Now, a century later, Min Mara is sending abroad some of its own as a group of Halflings descended from the Gartetians prepare to set off down the Scyllinar, hoping to come through the other side of Ritten’s Ward and begin a new life.
